Rotting wood
Rotting trunks feed Undead and make the cycle of decay visible.

Rotting fallen trunks are a portable food source for Undead. They occur only in the Undead Grove and are distinct from the scenery of dead trees, stumps and bones. Other slime species cannot use the raw wood as their own food.
Portable stores
An Undead can eat from a trunk or pick up its nutrition. Once set down, the cargo becomes a universal food parcel and loses its restriction by origin. Certain fixed objects of decay nearby instead ease only the particular need of an Undead close to them; they cannot be carried away in portions like a trunk.
Slow replenishment
Each movable trunk has a finite nutritional value. New pieces grow slowly near dead trees, stumps, bone fields and ruins. This is a dry cycle: rain, humidity and light do not decide when they appear. Near an Undead nest, the world also maintains a small reachable base population, so food does not return only in the distant grove.
Two Undead dragged the same rotting trunk to the entrance. On my next round, only a green parcel lay there.
